The Nightlight Story
Eight years ago I had a powerful spiritual awakening while drinking Ayahuasca (a visionary plant medicine) with traditional shamans in the Amazon Jungle of Northern Peru. I published a "coming of age" memoir in 2010 about my experiences called, "Fishers of Men: The Gospel of an Ayahuasca Vision Quest." After my book was published I traveled across the country and shared my ayahuasca experiences in book stores, coffee houses and community meetups (Here's a video of me sharing a story at the ayahuasca monologues, and here's a video of me speaking about ayahuasca at one of the bookstores I visited).
When I first started working with ayahuasca, having never studied astrology and knowing only as much as my "sun sign" from popular magazines, I was surprised to receive many visionary teachings during ceremonies regarding the deep resonance between man's psyche and the daily movements of planets like the sun and the moon. This naturally led me to begin a very private, very "in the closet," astrological inquiry.
After finishing several graduate degrees and working as a teacher, therapist, and writer in traditional settings for nearly a decade, I couldn't keep my passion for astrology and ayahuasca a secret any longer. Nightlight was born out of an unforgettable sequence of ayahuasca ceremonies in 2010 that led me to 100% trust that astrology was my professional calling. Second to this Nightlight was born thanks in large part to the support I received from RealitySandwich.com (an amazingly cool web magazine I've written for since 2008), who helped me to get both my first book and my astrology work off the ground. Last but not least, Nightlight was born out of my desire to offer my professional work through an alternative business model. The "donation based" prices we have offered since we opened were designed to make sure that nobody ever gets priced out of astrology.
More recently, during the Fall of 2011 Nightlight moved from New York City and merged with Sky House Yoga in Silver Spring, Maryland, just outside of DC, to form a donation based wellness collective that includes regular yoga classes, acupuncture, massage, and herbal medicine (we've even got an onsite apothecary where we make our own herbal medicines and teas!). Through the Sky House collective Nightlight's work, and by extension the tradition of Ayahusaca shamanism, has connected with a diverse crowd of yoga students, holistic wellness practitioners, and community members. In the course of our first three years we have graduated over 50 students from our study course, hosted dozens of visiting astrologers, given hundreds of free readings in our classrooms, and I've personally had the honor of performing over 1200 private client readings. Though the numbers don't really matter, it's been truly remarkable to interact with so many talented astrologers, students, and clients from all over the world. I am continually humbled by the power of the planets and the plants, and I will continue to seek their guidance in the shaping of Nightlight's future...for they are truly the teachers and guides that have attracted so many awesome people to our work.
