Beltane Approaching

The Moon is in Libra today, and quickly applying to pass over the eclipse points from last month. It's a big day of momentum building and transition as we approach the full moon this weekend. Mercury is about to enter its home sign of Gemini where it will quickly enter the shadow phase of its upcoming retrograde.

What to watch for:

* Suddenly the mind feels ready to get moving again (Mercury entering Gemini)
* The slow mind begins multi-tasking (Mercury entering Gemini)
* A sudden curiosity or fascination with new subjects, people, or ideas (Mercury entering Gemini with Venus in Gemini)
* The attraction to words and language (Venus in Gemini)
* Building bonds of affection (Moon in Libra/Venus in Gemini)
* An attraction to wealth/class/status/sophistication/image (Moon in Libra)
* Intelligence is sexy (Moon in Libra/Mercury and Venus in Gemini)
* Moving aggressively still isn't working quite right but we've learned a lot by having to slow down (Mars in Taurus)
* Committing ourselves to a spiritual, academic, or philosophical path of study (Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius)
* Returning to something we've learned or believed in the past (Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius)
* The slow and steady building back up of confidence, trust, faith, and hope for the future and love of ourselves (Jupiter finally picking up speed direct again in Leo)
* The way words can hurt and the way words can heal (Venus in Gemini square to Chiron in Pisces)
* Gossip..a poison (Venus in Gemini square Chiron in Pisces)
* Reaping what we've sown (Moon in Libra)
* An aura of productivity (Sun entering the second decan of Taurus)
* Forced to consider something at a much deeper level than we anticipated, quicker than we anticipated (Pluto retrograde and heavy/slow/not moving much)
* Pride/ego/productivity/luck/desire/success/cravings/status/stature (Sun in Taurus squaring Jupiter in Leo)

As the Moon is covering the eclipse points from last month, the ramifications of the last cycle might be coming into clear view for the first time. Steps of clarity are part of the process of transition. As we approach Mercury retrograde again the transition will go through a good 3-5 more weeks of clarifying itself. In the meantime much is still falling out and shifting from the last Pluto/Uranus square and last months eclipses. It's hard to be precise about what's happening right now because we're still seeing after shocks from the big astrology of the past month or two, but we're also in the midst of a very bustling time of multiple transitions where nothing is moving super quickly or directly.

For example, Pluto is retrograde, Neptune is slowing down to station, Uranus is still moving along, but Saturn is retrograde, and Jupiter is still slow (but finally picking up speed). Meanwhile three inner planets are plodding along through Taurus and otherwise Venus is in Gemini. All of this, and YET we're coming off two eclipse cycles that engaged the last exact square of the Pluto/Uranus square.

Aftershocks and otherwise slow/steady or transitional types of energy.

Prayer: Transitions take time, and aftershocks are a normal part of the process

The Gods in Our Words

Picture
The Moon is in Virgo today, applying to a mutable t-square with Chiron in Pisces and Venus in Gemini.

A good day to consider the use of language and its ability to heal wounds, as well as the way words can be twisted or used unconsciously to deepen or worsen wounds.

For example...the use of the word "thug," used by our president and also the mayor of Baltimore to refer to what could also arguably be called a natural uprising of angry youth. Does the use of words like "criminal" or "thug" adequately or sensitively address the complexities at play in events like the ones we've seen in Baltimore? On one level, we can all agree that some of the rioting and looting reflects a kind of mob-mentality that should probably be criticized. At the same time, doesn't nature express rioting in so many different ways all the time? Isn't it natural for a system to heat up to the point of exploding? And isn't chaos part of that process?

Let's explore the wounding and wounded nature of the word "thug," as well as its mythic depth and vitality.

The word "thug" comes from an Indian/Hindi word "thag/thak," which means to cheat or swindle. Going deeper into the sanskrit the root means something like "he covers" or "he conceals." The word has a long history of being associated with groups of religious fanatics who roamed the countryside of India in the guise of peddlers, gaining the confidence of other travelers, whom they would strangle. One source I found says, "The motive of the thugs was not so much lust of plunder as a certain religious fanaticism. The bodies of their victims were hidden in graves dug with a consecrated pickax, and of their spoil one third was devoted to the goddess Kali, whom they worshiped."

Could it be that even though we're using the word "thug" negatively, that its roots bear an unconscious connection to the goddess Kali, whose demands for blood and sacrifice are "concealed" by the very history and roots of the word?

I'm not trying to glorify vandalism or destruction of neighborhoods. But at what point do we not recognize the hypocrisy or poetic irony of the very words we use to describe some of the events unfolding before us? At what point do we stop ourselves and do the inner work of seeing the gods in our midst?

Thugs, as many leaders are commenting today in response to our president and other leaders, is perhaps just the new "N word." And even the "n word," means something like "black." How afraid are we of the archetypal significance of what black is and what black does. Not just as a race, but as an expression of divine forces. How long will it take us to realize that the words we fear are the same words we use most insensitively or aggressively? Isn't it the hardest thing to admit Kali into our midst? Isn't it the hardest thing to acknowledge and honor the real depth and power of what's just happened around the world? Isn't it so hard to do so because to do so would be to truly allow ourselves into the black...into the depths...into something other than the continued polarization of "black and white," always toward the ennobling white.

Words can help and words can heal; when we study words their history resounds with divine power. Can we blame our black male president for wanting to separate one kind of black male image from another? No, of course on one level we all understand it. But on another level we have to seriously consider the ironies of the use of a word like "thug" from our political leader, and the way the word tends to 'whiten' the black rather than truly allowing ourselves to be penetrated by its archetypal autonomy.

Kali rages until she's heard...though, like the history of the "thugs" from India, the practices of Kali are also partially hidden or concealed, otherwise how could the black night guard the invisible landscapes from the trespassers of the day world? Words like "thug," seem to be more like the evidence of the day world's frustration with the contradictions or complexities of the black night.

Subtly of language and sensitivity of language blackens the black and offers dark roses of gratitude at the altar of Kali's temple. May we find the courage to remember the gods in our words and ideas...rather than using words too quickly or ignorantly or condemning words as just empty "words."

Prayer: Help us to feel the gods in our words and thoughts, and may our words and thoughts be healing, patient, sensitive, and wise.

Pluto/Uranus Aftershocks

4/28/2015

Picture
The Moon is in Virgo this morning, applying to trine the Sun in Taurus and then oppose Neptune in Pisces.

A series of shock waves heard around the world. Natural disasters and plates moving, peaceful protests against police brutality and simultaneous city riots, a transgender athlete coming out of the closet, and same sex marriage arguments before the supreme court. Though we can always make the case that the media creates or distorts these epics, or we can say that we simply see what we want to see, it doesn't change the fact that the collective "focus" moves toward what it is moved by. There is an opportunity for deeper reflection in moments like these, but we have to be careful not to get sucked into the same old scripts too quickly.

As we're just coming off a powerful eclipse cycle (one whose full moon engaged the Pluto/Uranus square), we're now experiencing some of the after shocks of that cycle. For example, Freddy Gray's arrest happened under the orb of the last quarter moon of the recent eclipse season (a highly potent symbol of final lessons or the harvesting of a cycle), right after the final meeting of the Pluto/Uranus square (another image of final lessons or the harvesting of a cycle). Freddy's death occurred under the orb of the subsequent new moon, a week after his arrest. Now as the full moon approaches, we're seeing significant peaceful protests around his death in Baltimore, as well as rioting, vandalizing, and violence.

While it's easy to want to blame or quickly label one group versus another (rioters, versus peaceful protesters, versus 'thugs,' versus uprisers, versus kids) we should recognize that these exact discourse dilemmas are part of the nature of the Pluto/Uranus square and why its so different from the Pluto/Uranus conjunction of the 1960's. When two planetary energies combine in a conjunction, they tend to act as one cohesive energetic/archetypal front. This doesn't mean that the 1960's were completely free from some of the same contradictions we're trying to work through now (which we'll look at shortly), but it does mean that their general expression "looked and felt" more united in purpose.

With the Pluto/Uranus "square" era we're now dealing with the continuation of many of the same themes from the 60's: social transformation, rebellion, powerful surges of pent up energy from the collective, etc. The difference is that the planetary archetypes are more at odds with each other than they were in the 1960's (generally speaking). Some examples of how the discourse has shaped around the square:

* Occupy wall street is seen as revolutionary but not necessarily deep or transformative, or vice versa...there are mixed feelings and responses as to whether or not the movement was effective, mature, well organized, focused, etc, while others experienced it as profoundly transformative.

* A black president is elected but an ongoing conversation swirls around his presidency as to whether or not he's just "more of the same politics" or if his election actually achieved anything authentically revolutionary.

These are just two very obvious examples of major collective events that have embodied the tension of the square (I'm not taking sides on any of the above issues). When we apply the same understanding to the events unfolding in Baltimore we see the same tension. Peaceful protests and then rioters and vandalizers. Or wait...is it a natural uprising that goes beyond the simple categories of good and bad, black and white? As someone pointed out yesterday on a previous post I made, Doctor King himself said in 1968 (as the last Pluto/Uranus era was similarly climaxing), "These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard."

For example, we praise a black mother for getting her son off the street in the midst of the riots, but forget that uprisings are a natural part of how the youth revolutionize broken systems. This leads us to question to what degree that mother's handling of her son was based upon the same broken value system (shut up, work hard, and hope the broken white-favoring system does you right when it most likely won't). At the same time, can we blame any of the peaceful protesters for being angry that their marches are being compromised by violence? But then can we really draw such tidy lines when it's all simply happening? If we zoom out isn't it fair to say that something flat out human, in all the range of our humanness, is simply expressing itself, collectively saying in different voices, "enough is enough."

Yet we have governors and mayors and preachers and teachers (black and white alike) framing it as though, "some of this is good and some of it is bad." Which is an unfortunately limited way of perceiving these events, and yet....and yet...isn't some of this good and some of it bad? Can we really condone violence like this? Again the dilemma of the square and its unwillingness to compromise.

Layers upon layers of history are colliding in events like these, and the difficulty we have in sorting through it is happening specifically because we can't think so simply anymore. The categories of "black and white" are so much more and also so much less than what their names imply. With conflicts like these, with so many delicate complications, we are slowly but surely revolutionizing our consciousness beyond or deeper into the most obtuse and simple forms of categorical conflict: gender, race, sex, religion, age, class, etc. It will be interesting to see what happens during the Pluto/Uranus opposition in 35+ years from now when these planetary energies reach a peak opportunity for conflict and synthesis.

In the meantime, it's important that we recognize how easy it is to get caught up in one or another layer of the many sensitive scripts floating around right now. Revolution is not the same as reaction, and yet reaction is part of revolution. So what can we do but participate in the contradictions of the times we live in?

Prayer: There isn't just one problem and there isn't just one solution...help us to respect the complications of these powerful events and do the best we can to live into the paradox of the times.

Pluto Retrograde: Reflections on Fate

4/27/2015

Picture
The Moon is squaring Mercury this morning and then goes void of course for the rest of the day until moving into Virgo tonight.

Reflections on Pluto moving retrograde:

* Fate means never having to say, "I told you so." Because when we've really understood fate, then we understand that it's not a matter of prediction or advice. It's not a simple matter of instructions not followed, as though fate is a punishment, and it's not about the early bird catching the worm or any other protestant work ethic that saves the day and earns the righteous paycheck. Fate doesn't need to say, "I told you so," because fate doesn't speak out against anything.

* We can't avoid fate by hoping it will go away or by trying to make choices that eliminate fate's hand in the matter.

* The word 'fate' means, among other things, "to speak," and it carries an old association with the idea that the words or sentences of the gods in human lives are absolute...there are divine words spoken into our lives that cannot be altered or changed...there are guiding events that we cannot control.

* The word 'fate' also carries an old reference to the spirits, guides, or gods assigned to the fortunes and destines of individuals...the 'fates' are plural..they conspire with us and through us in order to weave the words of the gods...some of these beings can be prayed to, their minds changed, their help or hindrance invoked...while others cannot be petitioned.

* Isn't it funny that in certain areas of our lives we already know what's going to happen? We already know the nature of the story. We know what's coming, and yet we play the part and the pain or joy of the results still feel as unexpected or as real as though we never knew. Isn't it strange how fate can feel cold and distancing and yet in the most stubbornly fated events the feelings we have are more alive than ever?

* A question: where are you avoiding the inevitable? What would it look like to stop avoiding it? What are a few small steps you can take to welcome the presence of your fate?

* Fate isn't a nasty killer, and it's also not a smiling saint. Fate isn't cruel, but it's also not entirely benevolent. Fate isn't free and it isn't determined. It isn't mechanical or indifferent but it isn't entirely subjective or personal either. There is an intelligence to fate, and yet it remains always surprising.

* Heraclitus once wrote about fate, "Two made one are never one. Arguing the same we disagree. Singing together we compete. We choose each other to be one, and from the one both soon diverge. Without injustices, the name of justice would mean what? While cosmic wisdom understands all things are good and just, intelligence may find injustice here, and justice somewhere else. Justice in our minds is strife. We cannot help but see war makes us as we are. Thus are things decreed by fate."

* The fates are silent speakers whose words are the invisible echo within everything.

* To contemplate or negotiate your fate, go to a high place and look down at the world below. To remember and receive your fate, look from a low place to something high above.

* To get a second date with fate, stop thinking about her and focus on what you're doing, or the task at hand. She finds independence attractive.

* When you dream, remember to fall asleep first. Fate thinks lucid dreaming can be like a form of adultery.

* Commit yourself fully to your mistakes. No silver linings or positive spin. Just the image of you making your mistake. Stick with the image. See what it does next. See what it becomes. See what else it has to say. Principles destroy images, and fate loves images more than principles. In fact she sees principles as images first.

Prayer: Stranger and more interesting things are always happening when fate becomes an active part of our imagination.

* Confidence, courage, positivity, character, and faith (Moon/Jupiter in Leo)

* Revising, revisiting, or turning inward to examine systems of knowledge, faith, or belief in all areas of life (Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius)

* Unexpected success, invention, transformation, rebellion, and self expression or creativity (Moon/Jupiter both moving toward trine with Uranus)

* Slow/steady/difficult laboring of thoughts, plans, and organization of the future (Mars/Mercury in Taurus)

* Recent contentious conversations starting to die down (Mercury separating from Mars)...now there might be more patience, peace, understanding

* A powerful phase of transformation from one era to another is underway, but it's slow going at the beginning (Pluto just turned retrograde but still moving incredibly slow)

* Keeping the environment safe, stable, secure, and peaceful...controlled harmony (Sun in Taurus)

* Fascination with multiple streams of information, multi-tasking, and keeping busy (Venus in Gemini)

* Unexpected, highly creative or rebellious statements or communications or flirtations (Venus sextile Uranus)

As the first quarter Moon has just come through it's a great day to start putting plans into action. The moon has the momentum now to help us make headway in a good direction. Beware of laziness. This moon cycle might feel a little chilled out compared to last, but each day "success in small things," as the IChing says!

Prayer: Success in small things. Slowly but surely.

First Quarter Lion and the Bull

4/25/2015

Picture
First quarter Moon in Leo today. A crisis of action, as old man Rudhyar used to say.

What to watch for:

* Money and pride (Taurus/Leo Sun/Moon)
* Simplicity and power (Taurus/Leo)
* A nice environment ruined by selfish attention seeker (Taurus/Leo)
* Bling and the subject of living within our means (Taurus/Leo)
* Generosity versus selfishness (Taurus/Leo)
* Expressiveness versus conservation of energy (Taurus/Leo)
* Indulgence and luxury (Taurus/Leo)
* Loyalty and inflexibility (Taurus/Leo)

How do we use our energy and resources? Our time and money? There is a willfulness in the air today for our first quarter moon. It's about priorities and personalities. Staking claims and establishing our needs and desires. Sticking with something and seeing it through, even to the bitter end. Using our charisma, charm, and passion, and giving generously, in order to get through something, even when we may feel like conserving our energy or consolidating our resources...even when we might feel like something SHOULD be happening differently.

Gratitude is also a big theme today, though it might run more in the way of feeling like we're owed it rather than actually feeling it. Loyalty is also a big theme, as is entitlement and ownership.

Image: after the cowardly lion found his heart he was approached by several companies seeking investment help

Image: after the cowardly lion found his heart he patented a chocolate candy out of it and started selling it for major profits around the world

Image: after the cowardly lion found his heart he put it on ebay

Image: after the cowardly lion found his heart he carefully organized his finances and considered his options...he was patient and not too impulsive

What do we do with the tasty treat of our hearts and souls? How do we use it? What does holy selfishness mean? Questions like these and more as plans are being made and courses of action being charted for the future.

Prayer: Help us to have the nerve, and help us to be resourceful, patient, and easy with ourselves

The Dream of Taurus

4/24/2015

Picture
The Moon is in Cancer today, applying to sextile Mercury before turning void of course. A brief discussion about Taurus...

You hear a lot of things about Taurus related to simplicity, earthiness, beauty, and peace. Sometimes maybe a few things about greed or lust or stubbornness or possessiveness. But it's rare that we visit the dreamer in Taurus.

Imagine for a minute the most peaceful and relaxing day you've had recently, or maybe a day from an earlier point in your life. If you can't think of one then imagine the perfect day. These days usually feel edenic. Like we've entered the perfect Japanese flower and rock garden, or we've wandered our way back into some golden age. And yet, we all know that these perfect slices of heaven are temporary. We blink our eyes and they are gone. Taurus' polar opposite sign of Scorpio reminds us that everything is impermanent and that beneath every paradise rock there lies the dark secret of death, pain, suffering, chaos, and change. But while we're in that paradise garden...while we're there..it's essential that we feel as though we've been there forever and will stay there forever. This permanent paradise imagination is the mythic offering of Taurus, and it isn't just a naive or simple/animal love of beauty. Let's be real..the animal body or the animal/instinctual body as it exists out in nature is often highly alert, hunting, protective, territorial and fierce. It's not just "at ease" or "natural," in some simple/idealistic way. But herein lies the secret of the Bull. We describe Taurus in these highly simplistic/natural ways because it's part of the Bull's heavy footed insistence on the paradise dream. It's part of the Bull's guardianship of paradise that makes its own descriptions of itself as simple and permanently pleasant as possible.

Here are some descriptions of the Bull that are secretly the Bull's tenacious defense of the paradise dream:

* Taurus is about the natural/peaceful/animal body
* Taurus is about abundance and health
* Taurus is about sturdy, earthy, beauty

In each of these is also an omnipotent sky god whose face is a bull. If we want to dig deeper into the archetypal soil of Taurus, then the more we can step away from these "natural" sounding apple pie images, the better. Because paradise isn't really "natural," it's imaginative. Or at least it's not anymore natural than anything else. So what creates within us this Taurean perma-grin feeling that life is so simple and sweet? Let's consider that it's the sky bull, whose weighty control and omnipotence fantasies lull us to milky bare footed sleep in the middle of spring time. The bull is drunk on the dream of its own sweet and simple power trip. The dreamer of mid-spring is love sick with the illusion of forever at peaceness.

Why shouldn't she be? Every sign of the zodiac intoxicates us with its own mythos. So why not the dream of natural, simple, sweet, and forever abundance?

The reason it's important to "see through" the simplest of Taurean descriptions is because we miss that the simplicity of Taurus is also the result of a fiercely controlling, bull-headed, stubborn, muscle flexing, sky god in the shape of an earthly bull. If we don't do recall the omnipotent god complex within the bull's psychic landscape, then we forget that people like Hitler were born under the sign of the bull as well people like the plump and smiling Buddha.

Within every antique shop there is fascism
Within every yoga studio control freaks
Within every meditation cushion all powerful denial
Within every ounce of positivity a crusher
Within the mid-spring dream a muscular bull whose long and powerful penis we can't take our eyes off..whispering words like joy, happiness, apple pie, and forever, forever, forever....

This isn't about dismissing any of the joys of antique shops, yoga studios, meditation pads, positivity clinics, or mid spring happiness...it's just a simple reminder that the "simplicity" of the bull can also be so much muscle pumping "bull shit," as James Hillman liked to say. A sorority or fraternity house filled with the illusion that all this wealth and class has always and will always be...."natural."

A good list of activities for Taurus season:

* Gratitude... for this paradise too shall pass
* Taking inventory in order to live more within our means
* Thanking and seeing the all powerful bull within these blissful days...recognizing his fierceness as well as his beauty, and staying on guard against his sharper than they appear horns

Prayer: all powerful sky bull...thank you for the bull of your sweaty sweetness...may we enjoy the muscular and fragrant imagination of paradise.

In Defense of Planetary Debilities

4/23/2015

Picture
Lately I've gotten a number of emails asking me why I use the essential dignities when describing the planetary weather (for example, Mars is in its detriment in Taurus or Venus is exalted in Pisces). The general concern goes like this, "Isn't the language sort of negative? Isn't it too narrow or prescriptive to use words like fallen or debilitated?"

I don't think so, and I'll try to explain why as simply as possible.

Before I do that I feel like I should acknowledge the concern about the negative language or mood of the essential dignities at a deeper level. Yes, they can be used prescriptively. In fact they can come across like curses if they're used in the wrong way. They can sound like fundamentalist jargon, and they can really hurt people when they're used like psychic weaponry or ill-fated omens, or whatever else.

On the other hand, here are a list of simple reasons I've personally decided that astrology still needs them (though I respect people who don't use them).

1. Tradition

While it's true that astrology is always evolving, sometimes it's better to stick with the insights of several thousand years worth of astrological history and not try to reinvent the wheel. When we look at the debilitated planets in our birth chart we're always gaining some of the deepest insights into our relative strengths and weaknesses. And while it's always great to turn lemons into lemonade, sometimes the real gift of a chart comes through accepting, truly accepting, our limitations rather than trying to recast every challenge as a "blessing" or "gift in disguise." Sometimes we just need to get a little more accepting about words like negative, difficult, bad, or challenging. We've become so allergic to these kinds of words in astrology that sometimes the only way to treat our allergic pacifism is with small doses of the very things we despise...some good old malefics, fallen planets, and debilities.

James Hillman liked to say that all psychology begins with pathology. That the deepening of the soul and the awakening of the psyche happen through our problems, not our heroic strengths. He also liked to say that friends generally sit down to discuss life's issues, and that intimacy is forged through the sharing of issues not virtues.

In some ways we need to do something like a soul retrieval for astrology. If astrology becomes allergic to the language of problems, then we lose the entry point for the soul.

For example, I find it ironic that many astrologers I've met will talk about the "toxic" language of debilities and yet speak of the south node like it's the mark of our original sin, or the journey of the soul as though its core mythos is about the "fall from union with god and its eventual redemption." Prescriptive metaphysics based in problems but no taste for an ancient astrological language whose insights about problems are far older and more time tested than the those evolutionary theories whose origins are relatively new...this is an irony worth reflecting on at a deeper level.

Again, this isn't to discount or discredit any school of thought, but rather to illuminate why the use of debilities can still be tremendously helpful. Tradition is too easily discarded in the name of cheapened ideas about evolution. There is room for the intelligent and compassionate/wise use of many different languages in astrology.

2. The fascism of positivity

After a decade of drinking ayahuasca my experience of positivity is that its just another state of mind to potentially get attached to...it's just as hard to let go of it and entertain ideas that are more difficult to swallow as it is difficult to let go of chronic drinking or smoking. Included in the range of difficult ideas that we are often forced to accept as "part of reality," is the experience of limitations, things we cannot change, pain and suffering, mystery, things not working out as we hope or wish for, death, unfairness and cruelty, many gods versus just one all unitive god, no redemption or resolution to the problems of life or existence, abandonment, betrayal, etc. Not only does the language of debilities help us to see most clearly the places that are similarly difficult to accept, but they also help us to see where there is help or alleviation or relief from these difficulties through planets or places in the chart whose positions are relatively or contextually stronger and healthier (so to speak). Again, we don't need to do away with the language of debilitation or make lemons out of lemonade when we start with a basic acceptance of the darker faces of the psyche. We don't need to feel doomed and ill-fated unless we start off with too much attachment to the idea that our life SHOULD be rosy or redemptive. It's as though spiritual ambition has cloaked itself in compassion with some of these complaints about debilities and then by its disguise tried to play the role of the saving hero. In fact, we should very seriously consider the idea that it's just the opposite and that astrology has gone through something of a soul-loss because of its inability to utilize the traditional language of astrology with care from the get-go.

Just because people cheat at cards, doesn't mean the answer is to throw out the game of cards. The cruel or cursing/damning and prescriptive use of the ancient astrological language is the problem, not the theory or the language itself. This is a crucial point that is purposefully ignored for the sake of a kind of false astrological heroism or progressiveness. Too many astrologers have built their careers on trying to look like the "nice guys" in contrast to the nasty "old school" astrologers, and it's both unimaginative and soul sucking to our very diverse tradition.

3. Anything can be used mindfully

I want to go back to honoring the complaint, because again I think that our problems are the entry point for soul. This persecution of debilities feels ironically saturnine to me. It feels as though the old devil is up to his tricky ways...using one of his favorite tools, "the scapegoat," to get us to believe he is something he isn't. Tricky old devil! But isn't that amazing? Isn't it amazing to think that the most pointed dismissals of planetary debilities may come from a debilitated point of view? Isn't it possible that the old task master himself just grew sick of people always blaming him for their problems? Can't we imagine Saturn (the great malefic) coming up with the idea that the language of debilities are all together poisonous and archaic? Isn't that sort of the heavy-handed "problem" with Saturn...he can't ever really get past his problems with his problems.

James Hillman also once wrote, about Saturn, that we get the most out of Saturn when Saturn comes to terms with his problems with problems. When Saturn can finally take himself to task then, as the alchemists said, "the blackening of the black occurs." The poison becomes an archetypal reality rather than a literal problem needing literal solutions.

Again..it's not the language, but the way we use it. Like Jupiter in its fall in Capricorn...we are quickly corrupted by our overly ambitious perceptions of virtue and goodness.

So for all of these reasons, I've come to embrace the poetic depth that the mindful use of debilities and dignities can give to the birth chart. I've come to take up the challenge of using these classifications as creatively as I can. Maybe someday I'll feel differently about them, and I certainly respect the great debate that our field holds on the subject, but for now this is where I'm at.

I hope this is interesting and useful for everyone--I felt compelled to write since I received several emails inquiring all at once!
