Remodeling the Cosmic Imagination

2/2/2016

The Moon is just about to enter Sagittarius this morning and will slowly apply to a square with Neptune and then a conjunction with Saturn, highlighting the Saturn/Neptune dynamic over the next day. Meanwhile Venus/Pluto and Sun/Mars are still approaching exact.

But let's take a break from Venus/Pluto and Sun/Mars for the day and step back into the Saturn/Neptune dynamic, which I haven't visited in my dailies for a while now (since the exact square started passing). The subject for today has to do with modeling. Are we using imaginative models of reality, or are we using lifeless models and then trying to compensate for their dryness with a kind of overstated emphasis on imagination?

To illustrate, here are a few points that CS Lewis makes about the imagination of the medieval cosmos in his absolutely beautiful book "The Discarded Image." In each point he is contrasting our "empirical" model of the heavens with certain versions of the imaginative model of the Ptolemaic cosmos in the west.

1. Whereas we perceive the heavens as covering vast and empty distances of silent black space between remote objects, the ancient cosmos was perceived as a series of spheres, filled with celestial/divine beings, colors, kingdoms, light, and never ending adoration music, ascending toward the primum mobile, the highest sphere which was the generative motion of the cosmos that moved everything round and round, beyond which was God or the unmoved mover.

The cosmos in the higher spheres above earth moved in predictable, steady, cyclical motion, moved by their intellectual love of the creator. By using the word "intellectual" we mean that their nature echoed or was closer to an embodied understanding of the absolute or the unmoved mover: the eternal. As the ascension continued upward there were hierarchies of angelic intelligences who were turned toward mankind and others turned toward God. Those turned toward god were like a never ending glorious song of adoration, circling in time an echo of divine understanding, which trickled down through the lower levels of intelligence all the way down to earth and would show humans how to create thsame harmony and love on earth through religious or contemplative life and the harmonious organization of society.

Even the darkness of night in the old model was seen as the conical projection of the earth's shadow. Whereas the daytime Sun illuminated the heavens and showed us the true reality of all the heavenly spheres (bathed in light), it also set us at the boundary, outside the wall of the heavenly kingdoms. When night came we were therefore looking up, "through darkness but not at darkness." We were listening through the mute of our mind's silencing of the higher realms...not that space itself was vacuous. Not surprisingly Lewis wrote a science fiction novel called, "Out of the Silent Planet."

It wasn't necessarily important that this model was "literal," Lewis says, but rather that it was itself a display of intellectual adoration...it's creation echoed the same kind of song that the spheres were thought to be singing because of their own higher understanding of love. CS Lewis points this out by saying that it's really a shame we lost the imagination of the model, because models were understood as models or intellectual songs of worship and beauty, whereas today they are considered only for their empirical "validity."

2. When we think of the universe having certain "laws," we generally conceive of these laws like a police state. We think of "obedience" and it brings up all our issues with authority and the abuse of authority. In the ancient cosmos the idea of law was more closely related to what Lewis describes as "Sympathies, antipathies, and strivings." Lewis writes, "Everything has its right place, its home, the region that suits it, and, if not forcibly restrained, moves thither by a sort of homing instinct."
So, the Moon strives toward or has sympathy toward certain things...there is a celestial realm of the zodiac that suits it, etc. These aren't rules in the sense of a police state but rather inclinations, and natural strivings that resonate from the planet, as in a kind of love or song. But these also weren't to be taken too literally. As Lewis writes, "On the imaginative and emotional level it makes a great difference whether, with the medievals, we project upon the universe our strivings and deisres, or with the moderns, our police-system and our traffic regulations. The old language continually suggests a sort of continuity between merely physical events and our most spiritual aspirations."

3. When we think of the cosmos nowadays we often come to the word "infinite." But Lewis writes of the importance of the traditional cosmos being understood as finite. He writes, "For thought and imagination, ten million miles and a thousand million miles are much the same. Both can be conceived (that is, we can do sums with both) and neither can be imagined; and the more imagination we have the better we shall know this. The really important difference is that the medieval universe, while unimaginably large, was also unambiguously finite. And one unexpected result of this is to make the smallness of the Earth more vividly felt. In our universe she is small, no doubt; but so are the galaxies, so is everything--and so what? But in theirs there was an absolute standard of comparison. The furthest sphere, Dante's maggior corpo is, quite simply and finally, the largest object in existence. The word "small" as applied to Earth thus takes on a far more absolute significance. Again, because the medieval universe is finite, it has a shape, the perfect spherical shape, containing within itself an ordered variety. Hence to look out on the night sky with modern eyes is like looking out over a sea that fades away into mist, or looking about one in a trackless forest--trees forever and no horizon. To look up at the towering medieval universe is much more like looking at a great building. The 'space' of modern astronomy may arouse terror, or bewilderment or vague reverie; the spheres of the old present us with an object in which the mind can rest, overwhelming in its greatness but satisfying in its harmony. That is the sense in which our universe is romantic, and theirs was classical. This expalins why all sense of the pathless, the baffling, and the utterly alien--all agoraphobia--is so markedly absent from medieval poetry when it leads us, as so often, into the sky."

-------

Regardless of whether or not we agree with Lewis on all the above points, or if we value the imaginative beauty of the various medieval/ancient views of the cosmos listed above, what I've been noticing about this Saturn/Neptune transit is the importance of looking at the imaginative value of our models. What models do we hold when we look above us--do we even have a working idea or image of the cosmos beyond the fluctuations of our personal thoughts and actions and emotions and opinions? Even if we are deeply reflective/psychological people, how does our privileging of psychological reflection model the cosmos in which it finds itself psychologizing?

I admire people like Richard Tarnas and Steven Forrest and Robert Hand who are actively working not just toward methods of character, behavior, personal growth or psychological description in the birth chart but who are also taking on celestial modeling and it's importance to the human imagination. Especially since we live in a time when our cosmos has been largely disenchanted by modern empiricism. In my own studies I am finding that a deeper study of the traditional cosmos is helping me to see astrology with new eyes...eyes that see intelligent and beautiful music playing ceaselessly in the heavens, and eyes that see a towering but diverse structure...one in which my mind finds harmony and rest..no shortage of diversity and all laws ringing out like call and response music rather than traffic regulations taking place in an empty, cold, and silent space above or beyond me.

Granted, there is nothing wrong with either space or silence or emptiness...but my feeling is that even space and silence and emptiness may need revising for the sake of the imagination of many people on our planet...whose experience of silence and space and emptiness above are not nearly alive and musical enough within.

Prayer: Help us to feel held by the cosmos we look up at, until it comes to rest the busy mind within, a call and response that's been sung for as long as time has been the moving image of eternity.

Mercury/Pluto and the Salve of Cynicism

12/19/2015

The Moon is in Aries this morning, moving toward a square with Mercury and Pluto by later this afternoon, and then gradually heading toward a conjunction with Uranus and then an opposition with Mars by tomorrow morning.

In Kickstarter news, we have just 12 days to go! If you enjoy my daily horoscopes, then please help me finish this fundraiser with one last push. The funds we raise from here on out go toward building a community medicine garden through our yoga studio. Donate and receive a discounted reading or tuition for one of our programs! Click on the link in the comments section below.

Meanwhile, let's look at the Mercury/Pluto conjunction that's being activated today by the Moon in Aries. Mercury will be conjoined with Pluto exactly as the day progresses, and as it perfects the Moon will simultaneously square the two planets.
Reflecting on the Mercury/Pluto conjunction this morning as I was watching my daughter recognize the sunlight and moving tree branches in the wind outside the window (sorry in advance for another baby reference--they will likely keep coming!), I started contemplating the "state of the world." Global warming. Terrorism. Imperialism. Fundamentalism. Capitalism. Enough scary "isms" to make just about anyone want to crawl back up into the womb and call it a day. But then oddly enough I landed on an idea that suddenly seemed even more frightening than any of them...and that's the idea that we live in a disenchanted and cynical world.

When I was in graduate school I got to read a great deal of modern and post-modern literature, and it took me a long time to let go of a good deal of cynicism that barnacled to my soul through that period. Nothing against the literature and art of that era, but I grew tired of the notion that only "real, sober, bleak, and broken or fragmented" views of the world or reality were more mature or wise. I heard many professors praise this kind of art as having come to terms with the world "as it is," and not like the earlier romantics "wished it would be." And so for a while I threw out my inspired, romantic idealism and tried on writers like Hemingway and artists like Picasso. Writers like Raymond Carver and David Foster Wallace. I was living alone at the time, in a wintry cabin in Michigan, my parents old house on my grandpa's land, and this kind of dystopic "realism" in literature became like a form of spiritual renunciation. I drank alcohol, took drugs, wrote and read book after book, and felt more and more like my rejection of false positivity in the world was more noble, more true, and somehow more reasonable and artistically ethical than people who wasted their time chasing happy endings...or what Fransen called "Narnian dearness."

Several years later, after working with ayahuasca very seriously, I had a ceremony where I finally came to terms with this period of artistic/literary cynicism. Very simply I saw a train of modern/post-modern artists all dressed in similar hipster looking outfits, men and women alike, and they were walking single file up the slope of an iceberg and then dropping one after another into the frigid black-blue waters of the ocean below, like lemmings. I heard that famous quote, "The beauty of the iceberg is that 9/10 of it is submerged below the surface," and then I realized that each of the artists I loved were drawn to the reality of human coldness, like daring explorers at the arctic circle.

Then I saw myself back in my wintry cabin, studying the same darkness, veering closer and closer to the edge of the same "purposeful" self destruction iceberg, and at first I thought "yes!" "I've also been an explorer of the darkness. Because I'm brave enough to see past the superficiality..to get below the surface." But then I remembered the drugs and alcohol, and then I literally felt the drugs and alcohol in my internal organs. And I heard a voice that said, "the means by which we see through illusions is light and truth, not more darkness." And then I vomited up something that felt like a stomach full of pain pills and liquid that actually tasted like whiskey. Even though I hadn't done any drugs in several years at that point.

Then the vision was gone and I was left with a string of insights. One, while it's true that there is superficiality in the world, false positivism, false hope, and false images of happiness or wholeness, it's also true that the only means by which we are able to discern the crookedness of those false positives is through the light of something straight and true. The Saturnine contemplation of pain and suffering is therefore deeply important...in fact it is something like an inescapable gravity, and we would be foolish to dismiss its value spiritually. By renouncing the false positivity, the endless ambitions and desires, we essentially say to ourselves, "images of worldly fulfillment mean nothing to me...they are fruitless."

However, if this renunciation becomes nothing more than a new image, a new vogue, a new style, or a new way to prop up the ego, then it's more likely we see the extra paraphernalia...things like bottles of alcohol sitting on the book case, hipster apparel, and the idolization of a broken or fragmented world. Saturn's view in a sense becomes God or an end unto itself, and we forget the light by means of which we see through Saturn's point of view in the first place. We end up marching off the iceberg like lemmings, without any recollection of the light that has illuminated the abyss below.

Somewhere in the middle of all this there exists an appreciation for happiness, joy, goodness, and wholeness while simultaneously embracing the limits, decay, and falseness of the world. CS Lewis, answering critics similar to Fransen (who criticized his Narnian dearness) said that "a heap of broken images" was itself an image that needed breaking. Lewis also wrote, "the acceptance of loss..combines itself in two "Ways," the romantic and the ascetic, the affirmation and rejection of images."

So, as Mercury and Pluto are coming together in the sky today, it's quite natural for us to be contemplating the deeper, darker, truths. It's natural for us to have to come to terms with some level of illusion or delusion that we've been entertaining. It's quite natural for secrets, deceptions, betrayal, or hidden material to come up. It's quite natural as a result for us to want to renounce elements of falseness in ourselves, in others, or in the world at large. It's quite natural for us to feel that we're living in a heap of broken promises and broken images. It's quite natural for us to feel that this is a wiser or deeper point of view. But let us not forget the light by means of which what is hidden comes up right now. Let us not forget the light by means of which the darkness offers its enduring truth and treasure. Let's not forget that this moment of revelation isn't the end game...so we can't go building a temple to falseness just because we believe it's more true. That's a bitter pill, and often the temptation of a Mercury/Pluto/Moon combination.

This morning when I thought of the bleakness of the world, I feared for my tiny little daughter. "What kind of world have you come into, little one?" Then I paused because I could see her seeing the light outside, and it made me remember the light by means of which I was asking the question. The light by means of which my fear is indeed valid and "real." And as she smiled looking at the light, the gentle fingers of the trees blowing in the wind, the sound of wind chimes clanging gently, I smiled with her.

Prayer: Help us to remember the light by means of which difficult truths are revealed or understood...so that love and light may increase in a world that needs real joy and real hope.

Mystery Not an Empty Word

As the Moon and Venus move closer to a trine of Neptune, we might recognize the growing feeling of mystery, allure, depth, and sensuality.

CS Lewis once wrote, "It is the chief duty of the interpreter to begin analyses and leave them unfinished."

Heraclitus wrote, "Nature loves to hide."

Lao Tzu wrote, "The way that can be named is not the way."

And James Hillman wrote, "The soul is undiscovered, though explored forever, to a depth beyond report."

In the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the children meet a talking Star. Skeptical Eustace says, "“In our world a star is a huge ball of flaming gas." The star replies, "Even in your world, my son, that is not what a star is, but only what it is made of.”

We sometimes think of this mystery as having to do with the limits of the mind. But doesn't that put mystery in the service of the mind, as though we each have an easily accessible, bottom line, "Well, some things just can't be spoken. It's all so mysterious anyway!"

I'm not so sure this is the best way to use the word...doesn't it leave out the fact that mystery isn't just a concept we use to communicate our lack of intellectual understanding? Isn't mystery a robed woman, walking with a starry headdress, Moon slippers and Solar crown? Isn't mystery the way something feels? Isn't mystery the way we know something we don't know? The tangible feeling that accompanies unspeakable holiness?

Isn't mystery something whose contours say things to us..even if they're hushed, or unrepeatable...mystery is not an empty place holder, a dead end, or a white surrender flag. I'll have none of that!

I see mystery like the body language of God. A subtle language that speaks more and more the more we choose to see beyond the visible, hear beyond the audible, and touch with hands of heart.

Prayer: Venus, Moon, Neptune...may the mystery make us feel all right.

The Centaur's Take on Archetypes

The Moon is in Cancer today, and the Sun and Saturn are conjoined in an exact square to Neptune in Pisces.

In kickstarter news we are just $27 from crossing the $10,000 mark, on our way to our stretch goal of $15,000 raised in support of my daily horoscopes. The stretch goal is to help offset the costs of part-time child care from within our yoga studio community in the year ahead. Since my wife and I both have to work full time to keep the yoga studio and all our programs and client offerings going, it's our hope that hiring a part time babysitter from within the community will keep us close to our daughter and keep our daughter close to the community we serve and the work that we love! So she'll get plenty of yoga, herbal medicine, astrology, singing and chanting, and plenty of lovely people in her life. If my horoscopes are meaningful to you, if you pass them to others, then support me in 2016 by purchasing a year ahead reading, or a birth chart, I Ching, or Tarot reading from the reward offerings! Every little bit helps us meet our next goal! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1163009170/nightlight-daily-horoscopes-2016

Back to the astrology. In reading the Chronicles of Narnia to my daughter every night I've finally reached the last book in the series, "The Last Battle." Given my recent Saturn/Neptune encounter with the medical intuitive, I found this passage (once again surrounding a Centaur) especially relevant. In one of the opening scenes of the book we learn that an Aslan impersonator has been giving orders to kill the trees in the sacred grove of Narnia, the place where the silver and gold trees and the central tree of life are planted. Once more, a Centaur shows up with his knowledge of the stars to intervene. Speaking to the King of Narnia the Centaur says, "Sire. You know how long I have lived and studied the stars; for we Centaurs live longer than you men, and even longer than your kind, Unicorn. Never in all my days have I seen such terrible things written in the skies as there have been nightly since this year began. The stars say nothing of the coming of Aslan, nor of peace, nor of joy. I know by my art that there have not been such disastrous conjunctions of the planets for five hundred years. It was already in my mind to come and warn your Majesty that some great evil hangs over Narnia. But last night the rumor reached me that Aslan is abroad in Narnia. Sire, do not believe this tale. It cannot be. The stars never lie, but Men and Beasts do. If Aslan were really coming to Narnia, the sky would have foretold it. If he were really come, all the most gracious stars would be assembled in his honour. It is all a lie."

"A lie!" said the king fiercely. "What creature in Narnia or all the world would dare to lie on such a matter?"

"That I know not, Lord King," said the Centaur. "But I know there are liars on earth; there are none among the stars."
The idea that men lie and deceive and err in their ways but the stars do not is of course nothing new. This is an ancient view. As the first century astrologer and poet Manilius similarly wrote, "For I cannot believe that when stars appear to view their risings are the product of chance or that the firmament is so often created anew and the Sun dies daily and is continually reborn: for centuries the constellations have displayed the same features, the selfsame Sun has emerged from the selfsame quarter of the sky, and the Moon has waxed and waned over a constant number of days and phases. Nature adheres to the paths which she herself has made and commits not the errors of inexperience."

The image of the Sagittarian Centaur is thus one committed to those unchanging, eternal truths. The pole stars and the true north of spiritual living, we might say. With Saturn currently in the Centaur's sign, the need to more strictly or seriously follow the truth laid out for us by something bigger and older and more consistent is clearly symbolized. We do this so that, like the Centaur suggests, we are not deceived. When I read this I was immediately aware of the way in which my astrological reflections, as well as a healthy visit with the I Ching, helped me discern my way through the experience with the medical intuitive (who had a very powerful effect on my mind). In a sense, the unchanging laws of the stars brought me back to the orientation of my inner compass.

For similar reasons I've always been more skeptical of psychics, mediums, or any kind of "healer" who doesn't rely upon a more fixed, permanent understanding of things. I tend to suspect individual "gifts" or titles while I appreciate people who practice acupuncture, ayurveda, astrology, yoga, herbal medicine, medical astrology, etc. In modern astrology it's perhaps too easy to get ambivalent about this distinction and say something like "That's just a 9th house preference, rather than a 3rd house preference." Astrology sometimes has so many angles and ways of "characterizing" things that it's impossible to say if one form of study or practice is better than another. Leaving the altar of liberal-arts archetypal ambivalence in modern astrology is sort of like becoming a dissident or a heretic. To suggest that astrology as a system of divine knowledge (not astrologers necessarily) is actually more reliable than psychics is sort of like spitting in someone's face at a rowdy bar. You're sure to incite a small new age riot!

And yet...I think it's fair to say that this is Saturn's point of view from his place in the sign of the Centaur right now. This is his case. This is his argument. This is his battle cry. Take it too far and you get Jihad. Don't take it seriously and you get a psychic trying to take all your money and convince you of things that aren't necessarily healthy for you.

Sometimes at this point we're tempted to say, "Well, you know, truth is personal." But is it possible this is a form of enabling? Is it more honest to say, "No. Most psychics and mediums are hoodwinks, and it's time someone said something plain about it." Is there room for declarations of truth to a larger community? Shouldn't truths compete? Are we not stripping truth of its power to transform our lives if we don't allow various truths to compete with other truths? After all, hasn't it been said that the opposite of a great truth isn't a falsehood but rather another great truth?

At the time Neptune was discovered, the Moon in her fall was overcoming a debilitated, retrograde Saturn in Aquarius. We should entertain the idea, seriously, without immediate dismissal or quick explanations, that Neptune in astrology may represent a weakening of the mind and it's ability to accurately perceive and hold the sound and lasting truths of astrology.

At first glance even I'm completely offended by this suggestion. Please don't think I have some flippant idea about Neptune being evil or bad. The reason I've given committed time to legitimately considering the above idea is because the archetypal perspective, which I know and love and can defend with great passion, commits us to an equalizing ambivalence assumption from the outset of any analysis. From an archetypal, imaginative perspective, we are told, rather subtly, or we buy into, rather subtly the idea that Saturn and Neptune are really equals. So we see boundless Neptune as just a kind of intellectual opposite to "structured old Saturn." And from the archetypal perspective, it's kind of a cardinal sin to suggest one is better than the other. In fact, the pinnacle of astro-archetypal wisdom involves the poetic blending and merging of the two archetypal fields, back and forth, back and forth.

The problem is that if you try to escape this dynamic you quickly learn that it's an ideology like any other. If you contemplate the idea that Neptune is a rather malefic planet whose presence has weakened the field of astrology as a whole, you are quickly told you're being "Saturnine," and then the high archetypal priests brand you an archetypal heretic. IF you insist, then you are said to be blinded by or consumed by one archetype...again revealing the inherent ideological position...that all planets are created equal and the highest position lies in a heightened form of ambivalent archetypal awareness.
Ideologies are what they are specifically because there is usually no argument against them that doesn't simultaneously "prove" them. This is something the astrologer and philosopher Benjamin Dykes intelligently points out in his lecture on the various philosophies of modern astrology.

So are we who love astrology studying the craft of the old Centaurs, who have lived for long enough to comprehend the unchanging rhythms of the ancient stars? Or are we who love astrology studying parlor magic and having seances with a legacy of industrial era, individual worshiping black magicians?

Whoa!!! To even suggest such things!

Again, please know that my intention in this post is only to provoke thinking. To nudge us more deeply into the Saturn/Neptune dynamic from an archetypal perspective, or to challenge us to examine our assumptions and allow for the healthy competition of new or different perspectives. To allow ourselves to consider, just consider, stepping out of the archetypal paradigm for a moment. To simply see what we see when we don't assume the position of archetypal ambivalence from the get-go.

Prayer: Help us to perceive the truth, help us to be on alert for the liar, help us to know compassion and hold the walls strong in the right places...doors open and welcoming in the right places...teach us patience, discernment, and abiding wisdom and peace. Humble our minds and open our hearts.

Mercury and the Magician

Picture
The Moon is in Taurus today, a favorite sign for the light of the night, and in the meantime the Sun, Mercury, and Saturn are all coming together in Sagittarius in a square to Neptune.

Last night I was woken up by a strange telephone call. On the other end of the line was an intoxicated man saying he was returning my call. It was disturbing so I said "you have the wrong number," and I hung up. Then he called back, so I answered it, and he said, "Your number is on a craigslist ad, just so you know. I just figured you should be warned about it if you don't want sex."

For about thirty minutes to an hour after this call I lay in bed unable to get to sleep because I was laying there wondering how my number could have gotten on Craigslist, or if the intoxicated man was being honest with me, or what exactly was happening. I wondered if I should change my phone number, or if I should remove it from my website (even though it's primarily a business phone). What struck me was the fact that no matter which direction I went with my worries, I couldn't tell what had "really" happened for that man to have my number. The more I thought about it the less I could sleep. Until my mind was sort of ridiculously projecting all kinds of fantasies about people who might have been angry with me, out to get me, etc. Then out of nowhere I remembered a line from "The Magicians Nephew" that I had been reading to baby Virginia before bed time.

The book is thought to have been modeled by CS Lewis on the planet Mercury (see the book Planet Narnia for an in depth look at the astrological symbolism implanted throughout all seven of Lewis' books), and at one point in the early goings of the adventure, the Magician Uncle Andrew says, "You don't understand. I am the great scholar, the magician, the adept, who is doing the experiment. Of course I need subjects to do it on. Bless my soul, you'll be telling me next that I ought to have asked the guinea-pigs' permission before I used them! No great wisdom can be reached without sacrifice. But the idea of my going myself is ridiculous. It's like asking a general to fight as a common soldier. Supposing I got killed, what would become of my life's work."

Then when the children are learning more about Narnia it dawns on them that Uncle Andrew, the magician, didn't really know how his own magical technology worked. Lewis writes, "Uncle Andrew, you see, was working with things he did not really understand; most magicians are."

As soon as these lines came to me as I lay there in bed wondering if I needed to perform some kind of magic ceremony to remedy my phone number being used inappropriately, I started laughing. My wife turned over and looked at me curiously, and then I couldn't help but laugh a little more because I realized I probably looked and sounded a little like a mad scientist...staring up at the ceiling like I had just discovered a great truth of physics in my head. "Sorry," I said. "I just realized Mercury is square Neptune." "What are you talking about?" she asked, a dazed look on her face. "Nothing," I said. "I'll tell you tomorrow."

Even astrologers, in fact especially astrologers, don't know what they're talking about. We frequently don't really know why we use the various techniques or methods that we do, where they come from exactly, why they work, or why exactly we're using them. For example, at the root of many Hellenistic texts are references to a lineage of teachings that are said to have come from Hermes. Is that Hermes the god of hermeticism and the sacred sciences? Is that a great man/author named after Hermes? Does this mean astrology was divinely revealed by the god Hermes? We don't know. And if we don't know that we don't know then we often treat ourselves as superior to our clients. We become like Uncle Andrew insofar as we see people as the subjects of our personally expanding hermetic wisdom or knowledge, rather than people who need healing insights or practical guidance.

In a larger sense, the point holds true for most people involved in metaphysics and the new age generally. The extent to which we pretend to understand or hold the answers, especially when we fancy ourselves as more knowledgeable than others about the mysteries of the universe, the more likely we are to treat people like test subjects or guinea pigs rather than fellow human beings. The truth is that we will often be confounded by the very things which we claim to "know" more than others about. Last night I was completely bamboozled by the Mercury/Neptune symbolism. Sometimes the things we think we know the most about are the ones most likely to have the wool pulled over our eyes.

When I told my wife about the phone call this morning she said, "probably just a fluke. I'd let it go." Yes. That would have been wiser than laying in bed paranoid for an hour, trying to figure out "why" it had happened.

And yet...it would seem that my horoscope today is the odd result of my tinkering or being tinkered with by Hermes!
So all of this being said, see if you can spot the Mercury/Neptune connection in your own life right now. Here's a few things to watch for:

* Deception, emotionality, disillusionment
* Technology snafus
* Oversimplifications, sales and marketing hypnotism
* Things not as they seem or appear
* Fooling around with things we don't understand
* Pretending something is rational, clear, and true when we are honestly avoiding a plethora of other details that might muddy the water
* Disturbing dreams or messages in dreams
* Odd messages, decoding, what's real and what isn't

Prayer: Help us to remember, "Uncle Andrew was working with things he didn't really understand. Most magicians are."

Wise Old Centaurs

With Mercury, the Sun, and Saturn coming together in Sagittarius right now one good question that comes to mind has to do with the acquisition of truth or knowledge. How do we know something to be true, philosophically or even just practically? How much do we lean on traditional figures of authority, doctrines, scriptures, institutions, disciplines or practices versus our own internal sense of authority, prophecy, or truth?

Last night I was finishing CS Lewis' "The Horse and His Boy" to our little girl, and she started touching my hand through Ashley's belly when I came to another passages about Centaurs. Maybe this is because she will be coming into the world with three planets lining up in Sagittarius, or maybe with the square to Neptune in the sky right now she loves fantasy as much as her parents do...regardless, I found it so interesting that as soon as I started reading about Centaurs last night she went nuts (as she did last time during the Silver Chair's passage about Centaurs).

Here is what Lewis writes in "The Horse and His Boy": "And about a week after we were both born, apparently, they took us to a wise old Centaur in Narnia to be blessed or something. Now this Centaur was a prophet as a good many centaurs are...it seems this Centaur looked at me and said, 'a day will come when that boy will save Archenland from the deadliest danger in which ever she lay."

And if you've read the book, then you know that the Centaur's prophecy about the little boy Cor (called Shasta) comes true.
In the Silver Chair Lewis comments that Centaurs know the science of the stars, and then in Horse and His Boy a young child is taken to a centaur for blessings and prophecy after his birth.

Last week we hosted a few astrologers who brought up a variety of very interesting arguments and ideas about traditional astrology, which is something I've started studying since the support of my fundraiser last year that allowed me to invest in my own studies at a much deeper level. And since those talks last week I've seen a variety of responses from people...engaging with each other, debating, and questioning. At the heart of these conversations I can't help but see the mysterious figure of the old man centaur from antiquity, Saturn in Sagittarius, and he is just as numinous and appealing as ever...robed as he is by Neptune's glamorous rays. At the same time there is an aura of suspicion...are we simply worshiping the past? Are traditional ideas in astrology "better" or just "older and more Saturnine?" Are modern ideas more deluded and Neptunian, or are they more appropriately cognizant of the subjectivity or relativity of consciousness and the multivalence of psychic reality. Are we living in a fundamentally more "psychic" reality, or is it fundamentally simpler and more objective than that? What benefits us more as astrologers right now, and why?

Back to the fundamental questions. What is truth? How do I know?

Behind the methods, theories, and their textual support or antiquity or modern progressiveness...are we engaging with honest questions regarding knowledge in general? I find myself stepping back to consider this piece of things just as frequently as I consider the comparisons between the various techniques these days.

Who or what grants knowledge? Is knowledge something to be possessed or is it a way of being? Does true or real knowledge validate US or do we validate IT? Does accurate knowledge conquer ignorance and direct us toward something greater or more satisfying or aligned, or is the acquisition of knowledge the red herring of intellectual elitists bent on war and domination of a subtler order?

In the image of the Centaur...warrior and prophet, anger and wisdom, law and freedom, ground covered and the future wide open.

Prayer: Wise old centaurs....we feel you here with us....open the stars and pour the beauty of creation down upon us...

Horses and Stars

The Moon is in Sagittarius today, applying to a trine of Uranus and then square of Jupiter. An exciting day of transits.

Watch for the burst of Uranian excitement, unpredictability, eccentricity, rebelliousness, or shock this evening around 7:00 pm (east coast), and then between 9 and 10:00 pm the Moon/Jupiter square highlights the themes of growth, faith, religion, truth, expansion, exaggeration, family or tribe, travel and optimism.

In the meantime, with the Moon in Sagittarius near the opening of a Moon cycle it's a good time to set new goals or aim our arrows at new targets for the month ahead. Personally I'm embarking on a new phase of my horary apprenticeship, having just finished an arduous section of learning more about the math and astronomy of the chart, as well as learning to cast charts the way that William Lily did! Fitting that the Moon in Sagittarius has me eyeing new learning horizons and long term goals for my practice. Sometimes the simplest astrological cliches are the truest. So today...see if you can spot the Centaur in your midst and try setting some new goals, exploring new territory, or connecting to something larger than yourself.

Speaking of the Centaur, as I'm reading the Narnia chronicles to our little girl in utero, I found this passage a few nights ago near the end of "The Silver Chair": "No one thinks a Centaur funny when he sees it. They are solemn, majestic people, full of ancient wisdom which they learn from the stars, not easily made either merry or angry; but their anger is terrible as a tidal wave when it comes."

I've always loved the image of the centaur teachers and their relationship to the stars. An image of man and nature and then nature teaching man without removing man from his animal nature. The solemn but virile beauty of horses and stars. Sometimes I just sit with those images: horses, stars, and eternal fountains of divine wisdom pouring forth from the sky.
Are any of these Sagittarian images with you today? The Moon was often referred to in relationship with the broader concept of "fortune," which means the world and its daily comings and goings...philosophically what might be called the realm of the many diverse things or the world of "becoming." Within this world, the daily changes of the Moon reflect the changing circumstances and the signification of what those changes will look like. So today, let's see if we can spot the solemn, sometimes angry or zealous, figure of the sage and his arrows. The horse and his endless open pastures, held curiously under the stars.

Prayer: I see the stars and run the fields. I find what was looking for me, over and over again, where freedom and guidance are recognized as one and the same...so I praise the sun and the moon, I praise the stars in the sky...and I study the images I see, written in the wise lights of heaven. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Amen.
