Let's discuss another angle of the Saturn/Neptune dynamic today and talk about disarmament. The disarming effects of generosity and grace, or charity and kindness.
One thing commonly signified by the Saturn/Neptune square is the softening or weakening of rigid principles or ideas for the sake of love, compassion, and forgiveness.
Have you ever had an experience where someone you were holding something against, or someone you had been perceiving in your minds eye as an ideological enemy, suddenly reaches out from the heart and becomes human again? The ideas you think they represent fall away and you're consumed with the best kind of guilt. The simple reminder that we are more than our ideas or principles...and that coming from the heart, being from the heart, we will always hold our principles in the right way? In fact, if we stand any chance to reap the benefits of any philosophical position it seems that love is the most important factor in our position.
Too frequently this act of grace seems to happen in the wrong order...people who have been wronged or unfairly characterized reach out and extend the olive branch. But we shouldn't be deceived into thinking that this makes a person weak...as though the strong thing to do would be to stand righteous in our position, "I was wronged, and it's up to the other person to recognize the error of their ways." In fact, the concept of turning the other cheek requires a great deal of inner strength because it is often like an act of diplomacy taking place in the office of a dictator. And the victory of the negotiation is love.
On the other hand, people have rightly criticized this approach as deceptively selfish or manipulative. Turning the other cheek is often code word for "using love to get what you want," like a character from the movie Fargo..just as "patient and kind as can be, don'tyaknowit!"
But in my experience the heart knows the difference if we check in with ourselves. The reason I'm reflecting on this subject today is because a few people disarmed me simultaneously last night. All at once, out of nowhere, several interactions occurred and I realized that in all three cases I had "ideas" projected onto people...and those ideas were stripped instantly because these people reached out and showed simple, human warmth to me.
Suddenly my own ideas were reminded of that simple fact..."it don't mean a lick if you can't do it with a generous and loving heart."
Reflecting further on the Saturn/Neptune dynamic, we might see the transformation of Scrooge at Christmas time. Whereas Neptune may reflect the spirit of universal love and the intangible feeling of cheer that is so contagious at this time of year, Saturn may try to hold us back from that "good spirit" because he has "valid reasons." When the two hold hands in our understanding it's possible that we have both good reasons and good cheer, both strong positions and a heart full of love.
My wife started having small contractions last night. As an astrologer who has a lot of strong ideas, I'm about to see an actual birth, and I hope it fills all my ideas with three times as much love.
Prayer: Disarm our strongest ideas, and fill them with the power of love
